"The war on the car, as seen from the bicycle seat"

Article in the National Post with a brief profile of URS.On May 31, Bells on Bloor held its annual ride from High Park to Queen’s Park in support of the stalled bike lane. The group has been organizing Bloor rides since September, 2007, while fellow cycling group Urban Repair Squad resorts to more direct forms of protest.
URS uses grassroots, guerrilla-style tactics and paints de facto bike lanes all over the city (especially on Bloor) to garner public attention. The lanes are usually removed by city staff, but one URS symbol — a bike stencil under two “sharrows” — painted over a year ago near Ossington Avenue and Dupont Street remains untouched.
“There are a lot of people involved who have been at it for 10 or 15 years, advocating for change. And they keep getting told no... we beg to differ” said Martin Reis, URS photographer and web site organizer.
“We can say yes, it can be done. It can be done for next to nothing.”

Included in this issue is a fabulous feature article by Dan Koeppel plus a write-up by Laura Kiniry about all things Urban Repair worldwide. A must read.
Wanna read it? I suggest you buy the Magazine. I did. Besides it's an inexpensive publication so worth supporting and the article is not online.

The Easter Present

TTC Adopts New Stickers by URS
Over 60 days after the TTC's unfriendly bicycle signage was replaced by the new, more welcoming stickers, the TTC has yet to remove from the over 60 stations where they were installed. It appears the TTC has embraced the new, more positive signage. A welcome change and even better all free of charge. "We fix, no charge." It is important to note that the TTC was asked to replace the old signage in 2002 but chose not to do so with the usual excuses...
Update: As of April 29th - Yup, still there.

The Better Way To Paint
Sticker Campaign Success

Ten days after the first stickers appeared outside and inside most TTC subway stations, they are still there. And it looks like all of them.

This article was submitted to me with the photos. Awesome work!
Chalk bike lanes
Why wait if you can do it yourself?
Author: David and two Sanitas
Riga, the capital of Latvia, has narrow streets, pedestrians and cars. Surprisingly, there are cyclists as well, despite the danger the cyclists involve themselves in. We have two bike roads that lead to leisure destinations, to Jūrmala (city next to the sea shore) and Mežaparks (forest for walking, running, roller skating, and Zoo Park). None of them are used for daily cycling to school or work, mostly they are just for leisure.
We have a city council, with transport department. We also have some pavements wide enough to share between pedestrians and bicyclists. And what is most important - we have people, who care, about streets, about pedestrians, about pavements and even about the city council.
So we built our own chalk bike road. And will continue to. Until somebody official will notice it, and paint it permanently. Newspapers write that we can expect improvement in five years the earliest. Meanwhile we will keep on chalking.
