The Help-Yourself City
Legitimacy and Inequality in DIY Urbanism
Gordon C.C. Douglas

- Includes more than 100 interviews with do-it-yourself urban designers, planning and design professionals, and community members in 17 cities
- Appraises the under-studied and widely-celebrated trend of DIY urbanism to highlight the implications for urban planning, community development, and how everyday people engage with urban policy and urban space itself

The Art of 3am BIke Planning
"Being Rancièrian sounds simple at this point. But wait, there’s a catch. Remember, he believes the powers that be are keeping things from being seen/shown, heard/said, or indeed thought. If you stop and ask who the fuck is Jacques Rancière, you will see he carved his own niche by saying riots are genuine politics, and that whatever we do when we lobby or elect politicians is just a farce. This shifts the art of bike planning from the gentile environs of city hall to the street and guerrilla actions at 3am in the morning." via Cycle Space

The Guerrilla Bike Lane (Baltimore 2011)

Video Link: https://vimeo.com/14125301
"The Guerrilla Bike Lane arose from a desire to express ourselves and our passion for an escalating need to reduce the use of fossil fuels. We seek to promote and establish fair and safe riding conditions for cyclists in Baltimore. The intention of our guerrilla artwork is to educate the public using environmentally friendly and creative means in a non-aggressive way. We hope this will serve as a catalyst for people to see and build the community within the city, to consciously take action instead of settling for an inactive way of life."
